Muakkadah Sunnah Prayers. However if missed there is no makeup or qada for it. These prayers were never missed by the prophet ﷺ and according to hadith there is a great reward to the one who offers them daily.
The other schools of thought such as maliki hanbali and shafii ruled that offering this prayer is sunnah muakkadah and beside those five obligatory salat there is no waajib salat. Two rakahs before fajr morning prayer four rakahs before zuhr afternoon prayer and two rakahs after it two rakahs after maghrib sunset prayer two rakahs after isha night prayer are examples of sunnah muakkadah. A person who performs sunnah muakkadahs gains thawab rewards of good deeds jurjani ibid p.
The hanafi school ruled that this prayer is waajib.
If one mistakenly adds a third rakah one would complete a fourth rakah and perform two prostrations of forgetfulness before saying the salaam. The nafilah sunnah prayers are prayed two rakah at a time not 4 rakah at a time.
